The Assam government launched a women's helpline to tackle the recent spurt in crime in the state.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the 181-Sakhi' toll-free women helpline at a programme held in Janata Bhawan.
The toll-free helpline will initially work from 9 am to 5.30 pm, but will soon be a 24x7 service.
The helpline is part of a scheme under the Union ministry of women and child development to provide 24 hours response to women affected by violence.
