President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the prestigious Padma awards for 2018 on 43 prominent personalities at a function in New Delhi.
Noted music composer Illaiyaraja, littérateur P. Parameswaran and Classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan have been honoured with Padma Vibhushan.
There were also many such names in the Padma Bhushan honours that have enhanced the pride of these awards.
These include the name of Dr Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma who will be celebrating his 100th birthday and is a spiritual leader from Kerala.
Along with this, Ram Chandran Nagaswamy of Tamil Nadu, the doyen of South Indian archaeology and history, legal scholar Ved Prakash Nanda are also recipients of the Padma Bhushan. Arvind Parikh bags the honour in the field of music.
The highlight of the Padma Shree list is the honour of anonymous heroes. Fourteen of the awardees are women, while 16 persons are foreigners and three are being awarded posthumously.
Among these heroes, scientist toymaker Arvind Gupta, Bhajjya Shyam for art painting, Lakshmi Kutty for traditional medicine from Kerala, India's first Paralympic gold medalist Murlikant Patekar from Maharashtra in the field of sports, Dr Sulagati Narsamma for social work.
Subhasini Mistry, a social worker from West Bengal, Rajagopalan Vasudevan, the plastic man of India working in the field of science-engineering. Anwar Jalalpuri of Uttar Pradesh bags the award posthumously.
This time there are many names of other countries also in the Padma Awards. Yoga teacher Nouf Marwai of Saudi Arabia was also honoured on 21st March 2018.
In these heroes, tennis player Somdev Devvarman, activists Abhay Bang-Rani Bang, Mohan Swaroop Bhatia for folk music, Narayan Das Maharaj from Rajasthan, Yessi Dhoden, who works in the field of medicine, Litterateur Arup Kumar Datta and Prof. Digambar Hansda, Piyang Temjin Jamir and Malti Joshi from the field of education and literature; Pran Kishore Kaul for art, Joyshree Goswami Mahant for Literary from Assam, noted sculptor Prabhakar Maharana, Krishna Bihari Mishra in literature and education and Sudhanshu Biswas in social work, Nanammal, the yoga grandma also bags the award.
Govardhan Panika gets the Padma for Weaving while social worker Sampath Ram Teke bags it for Social Work. In addition to this, 10 more heroes were honoured on 21st March 2018 with Padma Shri.
Of the 85 Padma award winners, 43 of them receive their award today which means the rest will be felicitated on April 2.
